Professor Graeme Hugo joined the Asian MetaCentre as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow from 27 April 2006 to 12th May 2006.

Graeme Hugo was educated at The University of Adelaide, The Flinders University of South Australia and the Australian National University.  He completed his Ph.D. in demography at the Australian National University in 1975 and subsequently took up an appointment at Flinders University.  He has since held visiting positions at the University of Iowa, University of Hawaii, Hasanuddin University (Indonesia) and the Australian National University and has worked with a number of international organisations (a range of United Nations agencies, World Bank, World Fertility Survey, International Labour Office), as well as many Australian and South Australian Government departments and instrumentalities.

He is the author of some 200 books, articles in scholarly journals and chapters in books, as well as a large number of conference papers and reports.  His doctoral work and much subsequent research has dealt with population issues in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia.  In recent years he has worked extensively on Australian population issues and problems.  He has worked particularly on issues relating to implications of demographic change for planning the provision of goods and services for the private and public sectors.

In 1987 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and is also a member of the National Population Council.  He is a member of the International Scientific Study of Populations Committee on International Migration and the International Geographical Union's Famine and Food Crisis Committee.  He is on the editorial advisory board of the International Migration Review.  He currently holds the position of Professor of the Department of Geographical and Environmental Studies and Director of the National Centre for Social Applications of GIS at the University of Adelaide.  In 2002 he secured an ARC Federation Fellowship over five years for his research project, ‘The new paradigm of international migration to and from Australia: dimensions, causes and implications’.
